Detox patches are another name for the detox foot patch, or herbal detox foot patches, there are a number of companies selling them including Takara Detox Foot Patches. I'm going to start this hub with a few basic presumptions. I would presume that you are looking for detox patches because you want a new way of life, a healthier way of life. If you're trying to overcome problems in your life which have been caused by toxin abuse, alcohol abuse, or drug abuse, then I think that you will probably need a little bit more than any detox foot patch. But if you're looking just to try and help your body to eliminate a lot of the toxins that we are susceptible to on a day-to-day basis, then the foot detox patch might be of some benefit to you. Now as for what the effects of detox foot pads are, there is a general amount of skepticism about this and indeed any detox methods. And the skepticism is always going to be much bigger when somebody is trying to sell you something.

You cannot really 100% believe what a manufacturer or marketer is saying because they are only in it to make a profit. And unfortunately you cannot really rely on so-called scientific evidence because much of the time the scientists themselves, are in the employ, or in the pay of the manufacturers of these products. This goes on in the pharmaceutical world all the time. In one way, you can understand it because it is business, it's in the marketing plan, telling you that you will get a certain benefit from a product is a way of making the sales and in turn making more money for the company.

With pharmaceuticals this can be a lot more dangerous, that's why the pharmaceutical companies are much more heavily curtailed in what they can do and say. But with something like a detox pad, you're really paying your money up for something that, hey if it doesn't work it's not going to give you any adverse medical effects, you would just feel pissed off that you’ve had to pay decent money out for something that hasn't given you any benefits, I can understand that.

Detox Patches

So first thing I want to do is have a look into what a detox pad is. A detox pad works on the principle or practice of foot detox. The foot detox pad has been around for quite a few years now and is gaining in popularity. One of the reasons for this is because the foot detox is an easy way, apparently, to detox your whole system. More conventional ways of detox are very difficult to achieve. You have to diet, you have to get plenty of exercise etc. etc. so to actually stick something on to the bottom of your foot, go to sleep, and wake up with your body feeling fresh is what people are hoping for. And I can well understand this, wouldn't it be great to have a medical cure for everything and not have to get up off your ass to do anything to help yourself. Life is not always like that. So the basic premise behind the foot detox patch, is that you would go to bed at night with one of these detox patches attached to each one of your feet. You would go to sleep, enjoy good rest, and when you wake up in the morning you should feel the effects of the detox that you that has been taking place in the wee small hours. When you remove the patch from your foot you will immediately notice that the detox patch has changed color. It has in fact gone very dark looking. This will convince you that detox patch has worked. That the detox patch has indeed drawn out all the chemicals and heavy metals that the producers had said that it would remove. So has it really made a difference to the way you feel? That is the question.

These detox patches, also known as sap sheets were originally developed in Japan by a group of Japanese scientists who wanted to explore the ancient Japanese methods of foot detox and condense them down into a easy to apply method of detoxification. They came up with the foot detox patch. The foot detox patch is made up of all sorts of tree saps and vinegars, plus it has many herbs which would be associated with detox. The Japanese are well aware of the needs to self treat problems, and they bring everything back to believe in the well-being and good health of everyone. This worldwide phenomenon of detox is ballooning out of all proportion. Like you said before people want to be able to have a simple cure for problems. I think that prevention should be on top of everyone's list. But if such a thing as a detox patch can help people to prevent problems from occurring then so be it, it has to be good.

So are detox patches and scam? The first problem that I can see with detox patches is that they might not work for everybody in the same way. For instance, if a person has less pores in their feet, not everyone has the same amount, then the detox patch will be less effective on them than they would be on others. There could be a multitude of reasons why the patch would work in some people and would work on others. So the people who do not feel any effects from it are always going to say that they don't work, and that they are a scam, they have paid their money out for nothing. People who feel the benefit from these detox patches are going to say yes, they have worked for me, I do feel some benefit and no they are not a scam, and yes I would buy them again. There have been scientific tests carried out. As I said earlier, you cannot really trust these scientific tests, and both sides of the argument have put forward their own versions of why detox patches work or why detox patches don’t work. So, the scientists who say that the detox patches do actually work, and give benefits to people don't need to be explained. Scientists on the skeptic side do need a little bit of explanation. The scientists have said that after putting up the patch and testing it, this was done with the help of test tubes and some form of acid to break the detox patch down, that they couldn't come up with any difference between a new patch and a used patch. Also there has been a test where one of the new detox patches was taken and the patch was held above a steaming kettle, the steam from the kettle turned the patch black after a couple of minutes. So it leads one to believe that if the effect of having them on your foot is to turn them in dark brown and holding them over a kettle turns them dark brown, then how do we know they actually work.

The benefits that people get from detox patches and foot detox products in general could be put down as the placebo effect. What this does is if somebody has already convinced themselves that they're going to get a benefit from something then they are more likely to feel physical benefits from that product or service. So when they put the detox patches on the foot at night, they are going to sleep believing that they will wake up in the morning feeling better. Their minds put them into a deeper sleep they wake up feeling much better, having more energy, whatever the benefit that they feel. And when they peel back this detox foot patches from their foot and they see that the detox patch has indeed changed color, they are further convinced that they have received benefits. So you can see how easy it would be for someone who believes in the detox patch in the first place, or somebody who has been at least been convinced in the first place.

Now I must confess that I do believe in detox in general. I think that the amount of crap that we put inside our bodies, and the chemicals that are flowing into our systems all the time from the environment, the air we breathe, the food and drink we take in etc. etc., we need to have some way to help our bodies to eliminate a lot of this toxic waste. So I think detoxing every so often is essential to everyone. The problem is that there are so many detox methods available out there. But I firmly believe that with good nutrition, plenty of water, and a reasonable amount of exercise we can all be in a position where we need less and less detox. And the detox methods that I would always recommend would involve natural whole foods, or juices. For instance there is a fruit detox which involves eating only fruits for one or two days or maybe even three days once a month, it's a bit more complicated than this but the explanations are on my hubs elsewhere. Another one is the lemon detox diets which involves drinking copious amounts of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Cleansing diets and the like are all part of the nutritional diet that we should be using anyway, to encourage our bodies to produce better health for us.

So in conclusion the detox patch is probably going to remain a mystery to me. Although I have heard a few people that say if you use the more reputable products you are going to feel better effects, sometimes it can depend on the actual ingredients working on different individuals. In general I'm all in favor of anything that makes somebody feel good, so if it is working for you then by all means you should be using it. But a good diet, healthy water consumption, and exercise is always going to give you the most benefits, even though it takes you a bit more effort.  Of course you can use the detox patches if you think they will benefit you.

I have tried these before but I didn't seem to have much effect. Two reason; it might be I'don't have health issue or you need to try it for a longer term.

But at my opinion, I don't think this is good. Thanks for your comments on this issue.

I've wondered about these, as I've seen several advertisements. Would they turn a dark color if left in air or do they really absorb that much 'junk'? Thanks for writing good hub!

I did a bit of research and found that the discoloration is just a chemical reaction of the material and not a detox of your body

As a natural health consultant, one of my duties is to investigate, and utilize natural products, as to their effectiveness. Detox patches definitely work! They do as they are designed, and should become a part of any wellness program. I personally attest to their effectiveness, in drawing some toxins from the body. Yet, it is only a part of the whole regimen of proper living, and detoxification, through proper living, and eating.

Great article. Most people are wondering why they actually need to detox. In fact, I was skeptical about it. However, I realized it is really important as this build up of toxins called toxemia results in chronic diseases like cancer.
