Many of us are going to suffer from insomnia at one stage or other in our lives, but chronic insomnia is a debilitating illness which can leave the sufferer feeling constantly tired and leaving them at risk of health problems. Unfortunately the problem has no real simple answers. It is a very complex problem that could have its roots in a physical disorder, or there could be psychological causes. Most of the time there is no alternative but to visit your family doctor. They will be able to assess any physical factors. They will also be able to refer you to a specialist who can deal with the more psychological aspects of the chronic insomnia.

There are a few methods of chronic insomnia treatments that you can try for yourself. Hopefully this will cure you of your chronic insomnia before you have to revert to medication.

Holistic approach to chronic insomnia

You must approach chronic insomnia from an holistic approach. There is seldom only one cause for insomnia and chronic insomnia is no exception. Therefore there is seldom only one treatment. You can get professional treatment for the different underlying causes first. Then you need to tackle the elements in your physical environment that are stopping you from sleep. Finally you can physically take certain measures before you try and go to sleep that will help you to relax.

Your life and chronic insomnia

When you have chronic insomnia you life can start to fall down around your ears. Every aspect of your life is going to suffer if you are not getting enough sleep. You are at risk of having an accident in your car, or having an accident at work. Your work is also going to suffer as you will not be a will to concentrate as well as you could if you were getting enough sleep. You will also suffer from mood swings which can affect your family life and your relationship with your friends.

Physical cures for chronic insomnia

Before you try and go to sleep you should undertake a small exercise session. This could involve a walk around the block, a yoga session, or even a half an hour on the Nintendon  Wii. You should try anything that will make you relax before you even try to lie down. Also try to drink a glass of milk before you go to bed because milk contains tryptophan, a sleep inducing drug. Other foodstuffs that contain tryptophan include tuna, bananas, dates, and figs.

Using drugs as a means of chronic insomnia cure

You need sleep and you must try and get to sleep regardless of the method. This can include visiting your general practitioner in order to get a prescription for some mild sedatives. This will make sure that you are at least getting some sleep for a few days. Once your body has become accustomed to a full night's sleep you may be able to come off the prescription tablets and sleep naturally. This is not always the case; in fact most people will have to visit a psychologist for some cognitive behavior therapy. I hope you found this article on chronic insomnia to be helpful to you.
