Back massage can be one of the most beneficial of all massage techniques. The obvious focus of the back massage is, that's right, the back. This is attached to every other part of your body, your head, your arms, and your legs are attached in some way to your back. And seeing as many of us have recurring problems with our backs, it is indeed one of the most important areas that we should be focusing on. There are many techniques that you can use for different areas of your back. Another obvious statement is that you need someone else to do the massage for you, unless you are a contortionist. Okay let’s get on to some of the techniques.

But before we do let me just say that you do not have to be a professional massuer to be able to give somebody a massage. It is a great bonding experience, and depending on your relationship with the person, can lead to more intimate activities.


Full body massage

When you give a full body massage you will normally devote large amounts of time to the back, because this is the largest area of your body. It is also an area where people are likely to store up tension.  You can make use of some of the many products on the market such as the back massager, the back massage cushion, or the back massage chair.


Steps for shoulder massage

The person you eat your massaging should be on their stomach. Position yourself around their head or shoulders slowly move your hands from the shoulders down either side of the spine, return towards the shoulders, moving very lightly. Then work on each shoulder, moving your partner's head to accommodate your hands. Move your hands from the base of the neck down across to the arms using firm strokes. Work the muscles with your thumbs at the base of the neck. You are trying to work out any knots that you can feel.


Upper back massage

For this area of backmassage, you want to start with in light strokes from the bottom to the top and from the top to the bottom. So you are starting with one hand on the shoulder of one hand at the bottom of the back and slowly but firmly drawing both hands together over the muscles. For the shoulder blades you are going to work from the shoulder down around the shoulder blades. Avoid making any sudden movements here.

Lower back massage

Their are also back massage techniques for the lower back.  Begin by positioning yourself at your partners lower back. Make the same rhythmic movements from the middle to the low back on both sites.  You can make great use of back massagers in many of the techniques mentioned above.

Relaxing massage

If you are performing these back massages on your partner correctly, they should be relaxing and enjoyable experience. There should be no rush, everything should flow as smoothly as possible. Try and avoid working directly over the spine, it's the muscles that need the work. Sometimes smaller amounts of oil can increase the amount of pressure being applied to each muscle group.  If your partner is have back problems, you can try back pain massage, which will targetthose areas where the pain is felt.

How long do sessions last?

Your session can last as long as you are both comfortable. This can be from 10 minutes to over an hour for seasoned practitioners. The whole point of this is to take your time, do things right, and make the person receiving the massage feel as good as you possibly can.
